Boosting Brain Power through the Arts
In this unit we discussed the phrases " When I listen to Mozart, the numbers just seem to crunch themselves."
The professor asked us, what this phrase meant for us . As we know, Mozart's music is classicist genre music that are relaxing symphonies.
So, my opinion about it was that what he was trying to saying with this phrase, is that while he is working by making calculation and listening to Mozart's music, it is easier for him to make suck calculation since the music allows the numbers to calculate themselves figuratively talking.
The others also gave their point of view regarding that phrase.
We also told about what the book says, that the Arts refers to all the Arts including music, painting, sculpture, theater, dances and so on. And that the word " Crunch " that is in the phrase of the cartoon means " to calculate."
Then we worked with the vocabularies that this unit has like :
• Enhance = improve
• Proficiency = ability and skill
• Abstract reasoning = ability to understand general concepts that cannot be immediately seen or felt
• Self-esteem = confidence
• Underscoring = emphasizing
• Neurological = related to nerves
• Hallmark = outstanding feature
• Sequential = in a particular order
• Interventions = special activities to prevent bad results
• Curriculum = list of subjects taught
• Well-rounded = complete and varied
• Building blocks = parts; pieces
We also hear an interview from the radio news program All Things Considered, which airs on NPR® in the United States.
In this listening we took out the main ideas like :
• Music and art education can improve reading and math skills.
• The purpose of the special arts program in Rhode Island was to investigate the impact of arts training.
• The Special arts program in Rhode Island took advantage of children's natural inclination to master skills in sequencing.
• Scientists have made some guesses as to how music may enhance mathematical skills. One factor no mentioned is that arts training relaxes nervous students.
Children who benefit from arts training are those with no special latent. And so on.
Last we worked with the Passive Voice and the Passive Causative.
The professor taught us how to form the Passive Voice. It is formed by using a form of the verb to be plus the past participle of the main verb and the verb to be can be used in any tense.
Here are some examples:
• My laptop was stolen.
• The students are given a well-rounded education.
• His self-esteem was enhance by the new arts curriculum.
• Intervention will be needed if things don't improve.
This unit I liked a lot, because nevertheless I like art in general sense suck as music, painting, theater etc. I learned that boosting brain power through the arts help children's reading and math skills and so on.
