Warriors Without Weapons

The book develop this topic in many parts.

First of all, the book tells what is The International Committee of the Red Cross about.

The book tells that almos everyone recognizes the original symbol of the ICRC. It looks like the Swiss flag. Although the Red Cross was started by a Swiss citizen and it's headquarters are in Geneva, the organization has no official ties to Switzerland. It is not related to the United Nations (UN), either. It is a completely independent organization which is funded by donations from public and private agencies and from governments. The ICRC is also the oldest humanitarian relief organization in the world.

The book also says that The International Committee of the Red Cross now has three symbols that it uses internationally , these are: the Red Cross, the Red Crescent, and the Red Crystal.

Second, the book asks many questions relate to the topic like:

Have you ever done volunteer work? If not, do you know someone who has done volunteer work ?

Have you ever given or received first aid ( temporary medical treatment given in an emergency ) ? And so on.

We discussed the questions with the professor where each one expressed what they had lived about it.

Then the book narrates a brief history about The International Committee of the Red Cross.

The History begins by saying that in 1862, the wealthy Swiss businessman Jean-Henri Dunant proposed an international volunteer organization to care for the wounded on both sides of battle.

This history  is the development of humanitarian action, the Geneva Conventions and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

In this history we can see many vocabularies that we then use in many exercises.

Some of them are :

Legitimacy - moral and legal acceptability.
Devastating - completely destructive.
Volatile - likely to explode; tense.
Barbarism and Savagery - cruel and extremely violent behavior.
Ratified - signed; officially approved.
Institutionalize - make generally acceptable; establish.
Prevailed - existed; lasted.
